My process

Posted by James on April 7th

I’m a big fan of getting things done. Implementing new methods helping me achieve daily, weekly and monthly goals. After researching around, I decided to use OmniOutliner, i found this to be fantastic - to an extent, the problem with it is there is no way of prioritizing tasks easily (That I’m aware of). I have also started using Outlook 2007, after all the good reviews i thought, why not? To my surprise Microsoft have actually done quite an amazing job. The interface is great, with a good to-do manager, a great calender and the notes feature is pretty useful among other features.

My day starts out with me spending a short amount of time sorting a list of things I would like to get done. After answering the few emails I receive I dive right into photoshop. (Photoshop CS3 is excellent, the improved interface is alot more efficient!) .

As I am new to being a “full-time” designer, I have noticed a couple of things which have really improved the way I work. I had a problem, I started to notice small inconsistencies within the interfaces as the amount of interfaces designed grew larger. Now, I’m sure people already do this but if you don’t I recommend you do, it’s a life saver! Print out all of your interfaces onto A4 paper, 1 interface per page (ok so it uses a fair amount of ink). Now I’m able to look at all my interfaces at once. Having all of the UI’s in front of me means I’m able see clearly where any inconsistencies are, i can also create notes for further improvements.

Upon completing an interface, I send it to Luca so he can comment on it, if he points out any things that “don’t look right” or are wrong, I can then take this feedback and work on it. We go round this circle until we’re both happy with the result.

Ok - so maybe not!

Yes you guessed it, the great video-less video sharing website isn’t our app at all. Although, we did use the real interfaces for the client (our customers client) side of our app! Luca spent alot of time - why? - thinking of this April fools, and looking at the tremendous amount of comments, it sure was well received! Good effort to Luca for putting in the time in though! Back in the Juvely camp, the app is still progressing at a steady pace, we’ve been working silently (unfortunately) over the last 2 weeks getting things done. The reason why there aren’t many posts at this stage is because we’re simply getting small bits out of the way!

What can I tell you? Well, I’m not supposed to let anything leak, although ill tell you that the app will be aimed at small to medium sized business’s, namely hosting companies. Being there and having done that (running hosting companies in the past). I found that there is a major lack of a certain app in that market, although they are available, they are very badly designed, bloated with useless features and/or way over priced (for the most part). We’re aiming to settle this by giving you the features/interface you need without all the useless crap for more than a fair price, basic plans starting from around $9 a month! Also what we’re going to do is offer beta testers 50% off all plans for life! Beta testing will not be available just yet, sign up to the mailing list to be invited as soon as it’s available!

Its showtime!

Ok, so were are near enough ready to start the beta so we thought we had better reveal Juvely so we can get the right sort of people signing up for the beta. So, yep I know there are 7,000,000 a penny, but yep, we really do think we can do a better job, so we are launching yet another video sharing site. Now, let me explain why we are different.

Due to the sheer amount of videos that are uploaded onto the popular video sharing sites they have to have enormous amounts of storage space and enormous bandwidth bills, it is estimated that YouTube has bills of over $1,000,000 a month! That is crazy! God knows how much storage they have and how much of a headache that must be to backup everyday…… Well we have solved it.

Another problem facing all of the video sharing sites is that there is no easy way for them to verify whether the material uploaded by users infringes anyone elses copyright, this leads to stupid law suits. I expect you have heard of the recent case where Viacom filled a lawsuit against Google for $1 billion dollars, well don’t worry we have solved that too!

For some reason all of the video sharing sites seem to have problems with usability and making their material available to people who may be blind or deaf - it seems unfair that they should not be able to experience the full, uhmm, experience as the majority of people can. Well guess what, we have solved that too!

(We also think if our app takes away the popularity from all the other video sharing sites we will greatly reduce the effects of global warming)

I will get onto how in a second, but first let me walk you through some screenshots. Each user who signs up gets their own personal video stream at http://[username].juvely.com/, when they are logged in and view this they get what we call the “Dashboard”.

Dashboard

This shows a few of their friends recent videos. Videos are listed with their title and description, the length, the rating and when it was uploaded. We kept the rating system simple and used a traffic light system as it is a basic instict that green is good and red is bad. This means users don’t have to think to much when on our site, which will decrease the effect on global warming. We got a company to do a study and found that sites with a bad UI greatly increase the effect on global warming due to users having to think so much when on them. Here are the results (source JunctionSix 2007):

Global Warming vs Badly Designed Websites Jack Bauer 24

As you can see, the data speaks for itself, so by using our product you will be doing ‘your bit’ to slow down the effects of global warming! As well as listing videos we also have various statistics which we hope people will find useful.

Next up I will show the “Upload a video page”, as you can see below it is very similar to the “Dashboard”.

Upload a Video

Again, we keep things simple and don’t ask for much. We have a wide range of categories which we believe would be suitable for our target audience, include the not so much targetted follows of extra terestrials and people who like to watch other people engaging in sexual acts. We provide all the common features like who can see this, a desription and tags, but we also ask what you feel about you video. Again we also believe this can help reduce the effects of global warming but we have yet to get the results back.

Lastly I will finish off by showing you the page where you can view the videos, this is our heart and joy and we believe this enables us to beat all those other apps as we stated to begin with.

View Video

As you can see it is rather simple again, up the top there is some useful information about the video, then what the user wrote about it, and then comments people have left for it. Video replies are shown in a different colour so you can easily see which comment includes one and ignore the rest.

Ok, so you have seen it, hopefully you have noticed how we have solved everything so I will point it out clearly by telling you our slogan:

A video sharing site, but without the videos

So, yep now you know it and clearly you won’t be able to argue that we can:

  • save the web by reducing the amount of bandwidth that is used
  • make the movie and tv studios happy by getting rid of copyright violations on video sharing sites
  • make them accessibly to everyone, no videos means no problems
  • reduce the effects of global warming one way or another

Anyway, we hope you see how great this will be just as we do, if you are still interested in joining out beta then go ahead and signup. Also we are making a few changes at the moment to the UI (hence why we only have three screenshots at the moment) so if you have any questions or comments don’t hesitate to ask!
